Last night I just found out from one of my friend why she couldn't finish her final semester research paper for her Masters Degree at a very respectable the best university in Malaysia. She had to do a final research paper on a topic that was suggested (more like shoved down her throat) by her Supervisor (a Curry/Chutney Species) who is imported from over the sea. And this topic is so new that the University has very limited knowledge about it and has no facilities to support such a project.
It is like asking some student to do a paper on Nuclear Physics or some sort when they know that they have no lab or any expertise to make sure the project can be completed. Unless you have the intention of helping and expanding and giving her the fund and means to complete such a research overseas or upgrade the facilities in your stupid university. That is another story!
In other means my friend will have to get some funding so that she can go to some advance lab in the UK or the US or a freakin' Timbuktu for that matter in order to complete this research paper. Since this topic has no chance in Hell to be completed at this national university, given the circumstances that against her, she approached her "Curry/Chutney" Supervisor requesting another topic that within the means of the university.
And this Curry/Chutney Supervisor simply answered NO to her. He said she can either complete this research paper or quit without getting her masters. After going up and down the departments in the university asking everybody to help her to change the topic of her research, nobody in that whole university has the power to do such help for her. Or either they just don't give a shit about her or because of she has no significant value to the reputation of the university what so ever. She is actually that disposable to them.
Not unless she comes from a certain rich family with some title or relation to some ministers. That would bring fair treatment and justice to her unfortunate situation. Instantly! I know that it is an unspoken culture in Malaysia that when you are coming from some super rich family or some Tan Sri or Dato title parents, then only you can make sure things will be done accordingly or get a fair treatment. But if your parents are nobody and poor on top of that, these people have no remorse to screw up your life. Why? Because their lack of responsibility to the people will not come back around later on and bite their asses for punishment.
Why in the first place forcing that poor girl to do such a paper when they know in the first place that they are not capable of doing it. Why destroying somebody's life so that you (The supervisor & the university) look good and maybe put them in a reputable ranking among the universities in the world for the expense of this hard working smart girl.
So people like us are more likely to get screwed up by the Curry/Chutney Supervisor who are so eager to show their power to the University of how smart they are and how incompetent the students are. And these Curry/Chutney people are well known for their tongue twisting ability and they are likely to abuse their power when they hold certain positions. This is not the first case I have heard.
Why bother to import these Curry/Chutney Supervisors/Lecturers from another country when they can't even understand where we are coming from and then failed to assist our students to go to the next level.
Is this what we call Malaysia Boleh?
